5. MH CET Law 2026 Merit List — How It Is Prepared

The MH CET Law 2026 merit list is a comprehensive ranking document published by Maharashtra State CET Cell that lists all candidates who appeared in the examination, along with their marks, percentile scores, and ranks. This merit list is the backbone of the CAP seat allotment process — every college uses it to determine which candidates to admit.

The merit list is released as separate PDFs for the following categories:

Merit List Type Who It's For Used For
3-Year LLB — Maharashtra State (MS) Merit List Candidates domiciled in Maharashtra (MS candidates) Seat allotment in Government, Aided & Unaided colleges for MS seats
3-Year LLB — Outside Maharashtra State (OMS) Merit List Candidates not domiciled in Maharashtra (OMS candidates) Seat allotment for OMS quota seats (15% of intake)
5-Year LLB — MS Merit List Maharashtra domicile candidates (5-Year course) Admission to 5-Year integrated LLB at participating colleges
5-Year LLB — OMS Merit List Non-Maharashtra candidates (5-Year course) OMS quota seats for 5-Year integrated LLB
Category-Wise Merit Lists SC / ST / OBC / EWS / PH / NT etc. Reserved category seat allotment during CAP rounds

The consolidated marks sheet that is publicly downloadable contains the names, registration numbers, and normalised scores of all exam takers — including those who did not qualify (zero scorers appear in a separate section). The merit list proper lists only candidates with non-zero scores, ranked by percentile. Both the tentative merit list and the final merit list are published on the official website and can be downloaded in PDF format.

💡 Tentative vs Final Merit List

Maharashtra CET Cell first releases a tentative merit list based on exam scores. After candidates complete CAP counselling registration and document verification, a final merit list is published. Both lists are available as PDFs at cetcell.mahacet.org. The final merit list is the operative document for seat allotment. Ensure your category and domicile documents are verified to appear correctly on the final merit list.

6. Tie-Breaking Rules for Equal Marks in MH CET Law 2026

Given the large number of candidates appearing for MH CET Law (over 55,000 appeared for the 3-Year LLB in 2025 alone), ties in percentile scores are possible despite the 7-decimal precision normalisation. Maharashtra State CET Cell applies the following tie-breaking criteria in strict order to assign unique ranks:

PriorityTie-Breaking CriterionApplicable For
1st Higher percentage in Class 12 (HSC) or equivalent examination Both 3-Year and 5-Year LLB
2nd Higher percentage in First Language at HSC or equivalent Both 3-Year and 5-Year LLB
3rd Higher percentage in SSC (Class 10) or equivalent examination Both 3-Year and 5-Year LLB
4th Higher marks in English at SSC (Class 10) or equivalent level Both 3-Year and 5-Year LLB

For the 3-Year LLB merit list, since candidates have a graduation degree, the tie-breaking starts with HSC percentage rather than graduation marks. This means your Class 12 marks play a significant role even for the 3-Year LLB tie-breaking. Candidates with equal CET scores but higher HSC percentages will be ranked higher on the merit list.

⚠️ Keep Your Class 10 & 12 Marksheets Ready

Since HSC, SSC percentages, and first language marks are used in tie-breaking, you must ensure these documents are accurate and available during document verification for CAP counselling. Any discrepancy in your academic records at this stage can affect your final merit list rank.

7. MH CET Law 2026 Normalisation & Percentile Calculation

MH CET Law 2026 for the 3-year LLB was conducted across multiple sessions/shifts. To ensure fairness — since question difficulty may vary between sessions — the CET Cell applies a normalisation method to calculate equitable scores. The final result is expressed as a percentile score calculated to seven decimal places, which minimises ties and bunching of candidates at the same rank.

Here is how the normalisation and percentile calculation works:

1️⃣
Raw Scores Computed: For each candidate, raw marks are calculated based on their actual responses in their specific session — correct answers earn positive marks, wrong answers attract the prescribed negative marking.
2️⃣
Session-Level Normalisation: Because different sessions may have had varying difficulty levels, the CET Cell applies a statistical normalisation formula. This adjusts scores so that a candidate in a harder session is not penalised compared to one in an easier session.
3️⃣
Normalised Score Calculation: Each candidate's raw score is converted into a normalised score using a formula that factors in the mean and standard deviation of scores across all sessions. The formula is published by CET Cell in their official normalisation document.
4️⃣
Percentile Calculation to 7 Decimals: The normalised score is then converted to a percentile. Percentile = ((Number of candidates who scored below you) ÷ Total candidates) × 100. This is computed to 7 decimal places — e.g., 97.3421567 — to ensure maximum differentiation and reduce ties.
5️⃣
Rank Assignment: Candidates are ranked from highest to lowest percentile. In case two candidates have identical percentile scores (to all 7 decimal places), the tie-breaking criteria described in Section 6 apply to assign unique ranks.
📌 Why Percentile, Not Raw Marks?

Percentile is used instead of absolute marks to ensure cross-session fairness. If you scored 68/100 in a harder shift, you might rank higher than someone who scored 72/100 in an easier shift. The normalisation process accounts for this. This is standard practice for large-scale multi-session CET examinations across India and is the same methodology used in MHT CET and other Maharashtra entrance tests.

8. MH CET Law 2026 Expected Cutoff — College-Wise

The official MH CET Law 2026 cutoff will be released by participating colleges and CET Cell only after each CAP round during counselling. However, based on past years' trends (2024 and 2025 data), we can provide reliable expected cutoff ranges to help you estimate your chances at specific colleges.

Cutoffs for MH CET Law are expressed in percentile, not absolute marks. The effective cutoff is the percentile of the last candidate admitted in each category in each CAP round. Below are the expected cutoff bands for the 3-Year LLB programme (Open/General category, Maharashtra State candidates, CAP Round 1):

95–99.9%ile
Elite Tier: Government Law College (GLC) Mumbai, ILS Law College Pune, Government Law College Aurangabad. These are the most competitive seats. Open/General category students need to be in the top 1–5% of all test-takers.
85–95%ile
Top Tier: Symbiosis Law School Pune (SLS), Dr. D.Y. Patil Law College Pune, Shankarrao Chavan Law College Nagpur. Highly sought after — a percentile above 90 is strongly recommended for better choice.
70–85%ile
Good Tier: Many government-aided and reputed private law colleges in Pune, Nashik, Aurangabad, and Nagpur. Candidates in the 70–85 percentile range can expect seats at well-regarded colleges in major cities.
50–70%ile
Average Tier: Private unaided law colleges across Maharashtra. Candidates in this range still have a wide range of private colleges available through the CAP process. CAP Round 2 and 3 may offer better options.
Non-Zero Score
Minimum Qualification: Any non-zero score qualifies you for CAP counselling. There is no minimum percentile to be eligible — but your rank determines which college and seat you get.

10. What to Do After MH CET Law Result — CAP Counselling 2026

The MH CET Law result is not the final step — it is the beginning of the admission journey. Every qualified candidate (non-zero scorer) must participate in the Centralised Admission Process (CAP) conducted by Maharashtra State CET Cell to secure a seat in a law college. The CAP is conducted entirely online through the official portal at mahacet.org.

Here is a complete overview of the CAP counselling process for MH CET Law 2026:

1
CAP Registration & Document Verification
After the result is declared, qualified candidates must register for CAP counselling at mahacet.org. You will need to upload all required documents online. Original document verification will be done at designated Facilitation Centres (FCs) — usually government colleges assigned by CET Cell. Bring all originals and photocopies. This step is mandatory — you cannot participate in seat allotment without document verification.
2
CAP Round 1 — Option Form Filling & Seat Allotment
In Round 1, verified candidates fill the "Option Form" — selecting up to 100 colleges and seats in order of preference. The CET Cell system then allots seats based on merit (percentile rank), category, and availability. The Round 1 allotment list is published online. Candidates who receive allotment must confirm their seat by paying the prescribed fee online and reporting to the allotted college.
3
CAP Round 2 — For Remaining Seats
Seats not filled in Round 1 are offered in Round 2. Candidates who were not allotted seats in Round 1, or who want to upgrade their allotment, can participate in Round 2 by filling a revised option form. Cutoffs typically drop slightly in Round 2 as some seats from Round 1 are freed up by candidates who decline allotments.
4
CAP Round 3 — Final Mop-Up Round
The third and usually final round of CAP allots remaining vacant seats. After Round 3, any unfilled seats at unaided private colleges may be filled through institutional-level admission at the college's discretion, subject to CET Cell guidelines. Candidates who do not get a seat through CAP Rounds 1–3 may explore institutional quota admissions directly with colleges.
5
Final Admission at Allotted College
After final seat allotment, you must report physically to your allotted law college for admission formalities — submission of original documents, payment of college fees, and completing the enrollment process. Classes for the MH CET Law 2026 batch (LLB 2026–29 / BA LLB 2026–31) are expected to commence by August–September 2026.
💡 Pro Tip: Fill Maximum Preferences in Option Form

Always fill all 100 preference slots in the CAP option form, not just your top choices. A preference that is left blank is a missed opportunity. Even if you prefer specific colleges, filling all available options ensures you secure a seat through at least one of them. You can always decline a lower-preference allotment in Round 2 and try for an upgrade.

11. Documents Required for MH CET Law 2026 CAP Counselling

Document verification is a mandatory step in the MH CET Law 2026 CAP process. Incorrect or missing documents can lead to disqualification from the counselling process. Prepare the following documents well in advance — both originals and self-attested photocopies:

⚠️ Caste Validity Certificate is Mandatory for SC/ST/OBC

Candidates from SC, ST, VJ, NT, OBC, and SBC categories must produce a valid Caste Validity Certificate issued by the Caste Certificate Scrutiny Committee at the time of document verification. Without this certificate, reserved category benefits will not be extended, and you will be treated as an Open/General category candidate. Apply for your caste validity certificate well in advance if you don't already have it.

12. Previous Year MH CET Law Results Analysis

Understanding past year trends helps current candidates contextualise their scores, estimate their ranks, and set realistic college expectations. Here is a summary of key statistics from the MH CET Law results in previous years:

YearProgrammeApplicantsAppearedSeatsResult Date
2025 3-Year LLB ~58,000 ~55,000 ~16,000 June 20, 2025
2025 5-Year LLB ~18,000 ~16,000 ~11,000 June 6, 2025
2024 3-Year LLB ~56,000 ~52,000 ~16,000 June 2024
2023 3-Year LLB ~53,000 ~49,000 ~15,500 June 2023
2022 3-Year LLB ~55,000 ~50,000 ~16,000 Sep 12, 2022

Key observations from previous year data that are relevant for MH CET Law 2026 candidates:

📈 Growing Competition Year-on-Year
The number of candidates appearing for MH CET Law has grown steadily — from around 50,000 in 2022 to over 55,000 in 2025 for the 3-Year LLB alone. This means the effective percentile threshold for top colleges is rising each year. A score that earned you admission to GLC Mumbai in 2023 might not be enough in 2026.
🏛 Government College Demand Unchanged
Government Law College (GLC) Mumbai and ILS Law College Pune consistently have the lowest cutoff (highest percentile requirement) year after year. These institutions are the most oversubscribed, with hundreds of candidates competing for dozens of open-category seats.
🔢 7-Decimal Percentile Reduces Ties
The adoption of 7-decimal percentile scoring has significantly reduced tie situations that previously led to arbitrary rank assignment. This system rewards even small differences in exam performance and ensures a more accurate merit-based ranking.
📅 Result Timeline Consistent
MH CET Law results are typically declared 3–6 weeks after the last exam date. For 2026, the 3-year LLB result was declared on May 27, 2026. The 5-year LLB result follows 2–3 weeks later. The entire admission process (result → CAP → counselling → admission) is completed within 3–4 months.

What is the minimum score to be eligible for MH CET Law counselling 2026?
There is no minimum score to qualify for MH CET Law 2026 counselling. Any candidate who scores a non-zero score (even 1 mark) is eligible to appear for the CAP counselling process. However, your percentile rank determines which college and category of seat you will be allotted — low scorers may only get seats in private unaided colleges with lower demand.
What is the difference between MS and OMS in the MH CET Law merit list?
MS (Maharashtra State) candidates are those domiciled in Maharashtra — they compete for 85% of seats in each college. OMS (Outside Maharashtra State) candidates are from other states — they can only compete for the 15% OMS quota seats. Separate merit lists and cutoffs exist for MS and OMS candidates. Domicile is determined based on your nativity/domicile certificate submitted during document verification.
Can I challenge my MH CET Law 2026 marks or rank?
No. Maharashtra State CET Cell does not entertain any requests for revaluation, re-checking, or re-totalling of answer sheets. The marks, percentile, and rank on your scorecard are final and cannot be challenged. If you believe there is an error in your personal details (not marks), contact the CET Cell immediately through official channels before CAP counselling begins.
When will MH CET Law 5-Year LLB Result 2026 be declared?
The MH CET Law 5-Year LLB Result 2026 is expected to be declared by mid-June 2026 at cetcell.mahacet.org. In 2025, the 5-year LLB result was declared on June 6, 2025, while the 3-year result came on June 20, 2025. For 2026, the 3-year result came first on May 27, 2026, and the 5-year result is expected soon.
What is the MH CET Law 2026 cutoff for GLC Mumbai?
Government Law College (GLC) Mumbai is the most prestigious and competitive MH CET Law college. Based on 2025 trends, the expected cutoff for GLC Mumbai for Open/General category, Maharashtra State (MS) candidates in 3-Year LLB is approximately 97–99.9 percentile in CAP Round 1. Official cutoffs are published during CAP counselling rounds at mahacet.org.
I forgot my password for cetcell.mahacet.org. How do I download my scorecard?
Visit cetcell.mahacet.org and click the "Forgot Password" option on the login page. You will receive a password reset link to your registered email address. Follow the instructions to reset your password and then log in to download your scorecard. If you no longer have access to your registered email, contact the CET Cell Maharashtra helpdesk with your application number and identity proof.
Is the MH CET Law scorecard needed for college admission?
Yes, absolutely. Your MH CET Law 2026 scorecard is a mandatory document throughout the entire admission process — CAP counselling registration, document verification at Facilitation Centres, option form filling, seat acceptance, and final admission at the allotted college. Keep at least 3–4 printed copies of your scorecard and store the digital PDF securely.
Can OMS (non-Maharashtra) candidates get admission to GLC Mumbai through MH CET Law?
Yes, OMS candidates can get admission to GLC Mumbai, but only through the OMS quota (15% of seats). The cutoff for OMS seats may differ from the MS cutoff. OMS candidates have fewer seats to compete for, so the competition for top OMS seats at GLC Mumbai is also extremely high. OMS candidates must produce a domicile/nativity certificate from their home state during document verification.
