1. What is CLAT Registration? Why It Is Your Most Critical First Step
The CLAT registration is the mandatory online application process through which aspiring law students enrol to appear for the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). Conducted entirely online by the Consortium of National Law Universities at consortiumofnlus.ac.in, the registration is the gateway to seeking admission in 24 NLUs and several other participating institutions offering the prestigious 5-year integrated BA LLB (UG) and 1-year LLM (PG) programmes.
Unlike many other entrance exams that allow walk-in or late registration, CLAT has a strict deadline with no exceptions. If you miss the last date for CLAT 2027 registration, there is no provision for late applications, and you will have to wait an entire year for the next cycle. This makes timely and accurate registration absolutely non-negotiable.
🎯 Who Must Register?
Class 12 appearing or passed students (for CLAT UG)
LLB graduates with 55%+ marks (for CLAT PG)
Final-year LLB students (eligible to apply provisionally)
NRI and OCI card holders meeting academic criteria
🏛 What Registration Gives You
Access to the CLAT 2027 examination
CLAT Admit Card issued only to registered candidates
All-India Rank (AIR) & participation in NLU counselling
Eligibility to apply for seats across all 24 participating NLUs
ℹ️ CLAT 2027 vs CLAT 2026 | Registration Differences
The CLAT 2027 registration process is expected to follow the same pattern as CLAT 2026 (which opened August 1, 2025 and closed October 31/November 9, 2025 for form correction). Based on the consistently maintained schedule for the past four cycles, the Consortium has kept the application window open for 3 months (August to October), with a short 2–3 day correction window after closing. No structural changes are expected for CLAT 2027, but always verify at consortiumofnlus.ac.in once the official notification is released in July 2026.

Do not attempt to pay through any agent or third-party portal | the Consortium is not responsible for fraud on unofficial platforms.
5. Documents Required for CLAT 2027 Registration
Preparing your documents in advance is one of the most important steps before you begin filling the CLAT 2027 application form. Incorrect file formats, wrong sizes, or blurry scans are among the top reasons for application rejection. Here is a comprehensive list of all documents you need.
📷
Passport-Size Photograph
Format: JPEG | Size: 10–50 KB | Background: Plain white | Recent (within 6 months) | Front-facing, no glasses
✍️
Scanned Signature
Format: JPEG | Size: 10–30 KB | Sign on white paper with black/blue ink | Scan clearly | no smudging
📄
Class 10 Certificate/Marksheet
Format: PDF/JPEG | For date of birth verification and school name | Board certificate preferred over marksheet
🎓
Class 12 Marksheet (if passed)
Format: PDF/JPEG | Marks must meet minimum 45% (Gen) or 40% (SC/ST) | If appearing, provide enrollment/bonafide certificate
🏷️
Category Certificate (if applicable)

Passport copy + OCI card (for OCI holders) | NRI candidates: valid passport + proof of NRI status of parent/guardian
♿
PwD Certificate (if applicable)
From a government-notified medical authority | Must specify nature and percentage of disability | Required for PwD fee concession and reservation
📉
BPL Certificate (if applicable)
From competent government authority | Required for fee concession (₹3,500 rate) | Must be in candidate's/family's name
📋
LLB Marksheet (CLAT PG only)
For LLM applicants only | Minimum 55% aggregate (50% for SC/ST/PwD) | Final-year students: provisional marksheet or enrollment proof
⚠️ Document Upload Technical Specifications
The CLAT portal strictly checks file format and size. Uploading a file even slightly outside the limits will result in an error. Recommended tools: use MS Paint or smartphone apps to resize images; use Adobe Acrobat or ILovePDF to compress PDF files. Do not scan documents at maximum DPI | 200 DPI is sufficient. Always preview your uploaded documents in the application form before final submission.
6. How to Fill CLAT 2027 Application Form | Complete 7-Step Guide
The CLAT 2027 application process is done entirely online on the official Consortium portal. You do not need to send any physical documents by post. The application can be saved and resumed | you do not need to complete it in a single sitting. However, make sure to submit and pay the fee before the deadline.
1
Visit the Official CLAT Portal and Create Your Account
Go to consortiumofnlus.ac.in | this is the only authorised portal for CLAT registration. Click on the "CLAT 2027" link on the homepage, then click "New Registration". Enter your full name (exactly as on your Class 10 certificate), a valid mobile number, and a valid email ID that you actively use. Create a secure password. Submit the details | an OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number for verification. Enter the OTP to activate your account. Note: One mobile number and email ID can only be used to register once. Write down your login credentials immediately.
2
Log In and Fill Section A | Personal Information
After OTP verification, log in using your registered mobile/email and password. The application form will open. Fill in all personal details: full name, date of birth, gender, father's name, mother's name, nationality, category (General/OBC-NCL/SC/ST/EWS/PwD/BPL), and communication address. Critical: Every detail must exactly match your official documents. A mismatch between your application form and original certificates at the time of counselling verification will result in cancellation of admission. Double-check your date of birth and name spelling particularly carefully.
3
Fill Section B | Educational / Academic Details
Enter your Class 10 details: board name, year of passing, school name, and marks/percentage. Then enter your Class 12 details: if you have already passed, fill your board, year, school, marks, and percentage. If you are currently appearing (Class 12 in 2026), select "Appearing" and provide your school and enrollment details. For CLAT PG, also fill your LLB degree details: university, course type (3-year / 5-year integrated), year of passing, and aggregate percentage. Ensure the percentage entered matches your official marksheet calculation | verify before entering.
4
Select Your Exam Centre Preferences
CLAT 2027 will be conducted at over 100 exam centres across India. You will be asked to select up to 3 exam centre preferences in order of priority. The Consortium tries to accommodate your first preference but cannot guarantee it. When selecting centres, consider proximity to your current residence/school and availability of accommodation if the centre is in another city. Popular cities fill up faster | centres in metro areas like Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Kolkata are in high demand. Register early if you have a strong preference for a specific centre.
5
Select Your NLU Preferences (Maximum 3)
This is arguably the most strategically important step in the entire application process. You can enter a maximum of 3 NLU preferences in order of priority. Your preferences, combined with your All-India Rank (declared after the exam), determine which NLU seat is offered to you during counselling. Important strategy notes: Always list your dream NLU as preference 1, your second choice as preference 2, and a safe option as preference 3. You can update your NLU preferences at the time of counselling registration after the result is declared, but setting accurate preferences now helps. See Section 7 below for a detailed strategy guide.
6
Upload All Required Documents
Upload your passport-size photograph, scanned signature, and all category/eligibility documents in the specified formats and file sizes. Before uploading, check: (a) Is the photograph recent, front-facing, and on a white background? (b) Is the signature on white paper, in black/blue ink, and clearly visible? (c) Are all certificates in the correct format (JPEG/PDF) and within size limits? After uploading each document, the portal shows a preview | always verify that the document is legible and not distorted. A blurry or incorrectly cropped photograph is a very common reason for application issues.
7
Review, Pay Application Fee & Submit | Get Confirmation
Before final submission, carefully review every field of your application form from beginning to end. Even minor errors (wrong DOB, misspelled name, incorrect category) can create verification problems during counselling. Once satisfied, proceed to the fee payment section. Pay ₹4,000 (General/OBC/NRI) or ₹3,500 (SC/ST/PwD/BPL) via debit card, credit card, or net banking. Do not close the browser during payment. After successful payment, your application will be submitted. Immediately download and print the Application Confirmation Receipt | this serves as proof of registration. Note your Application Number / Registration ID for all future references.
7. How to Select Your NLU Preferences Strategically
The NLU preference selection during CLAT registration is a decision that can significantly impact your law school journey. While preferences can technically be updated during counselling registration (after result declaration), it is wise to enter them thoughtfully during the application stage itself.
🏆 Preference 1 (Dream NLU)
List your most desired NLU as preference 1 | the NLU you are targeting based on your preparation level. Even if its cutoff seems high, list it first. You can always revise this after seeing your result. Examples for high scorers: NLSIU Bangalore, NALSAR Hyderabad, NUJS Kolkata.
🎯 Preference 2 (Realistic Target)
List the NLU whose past cutoffs align with your expected rank range. Use the CLAT 2026 cutoff data to benchmark. If you are targeting AIR 400–600 range, GNLU Gandhinagar (#5) or NLU Jodhpur (#6) would be appropriate preference 2 choices.
🛡️ Preference 3 (Safe Option)
A lower-tier NLU whose last year's cutoff was well within your expected rank range. This ensures you have a fallback option if your rank is lower than expected. Never leave preference 3 blank.
📊 Research Before Choosing
Use our CLAT Cutoff 2026 guide to match NLUs with expected ranks. Also consider NLU location, annual fees, specialisation strengths, placement records, and campus facilities alongside the cutoff data.

8. CLAT 2027 Form Correction Window | What You Can and Cannot Edit
The Consortium of NLUs typically opens a short form correction/editing window for 2–3 days after the registration deadline closes. In CLAT 2026, this window was open from November 7 to November 9, 2025. Candidates who had registered but not completed all steps (or needed to correct certain details) could do so in this window.
✅ Usually Allowed to Edit
Category (if incorrectly selected)
Communication address and pin code
Exam centre preference
Re-upload photograph or signature
Academic percentage (minor corrections)
Pay fee (if not paid during initial registration)
❌ Usually NOT Allowed to Edit
Candidate's name
Date of birth
Mobile number used for registration
Email ID used for registration
Course type (UG → PG or vice versa)
After correction window closes | no edits at all
📌 Best Practice: Don't Rely on the Correction Window
The correction window is a safety net | not a feature to rely on. Some edits (like name and date of birth) are never allowed even in the correction window. Always double-check your entire application before final submission. Proofreading your form end-to-end before clicking "Submit" takes 10 minutes and can save significant trouble later during counselling verification.
9. 10 Common CLAT Registration Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Every year, thousands of CLAT aspirants make avoidable errors during registration that create complications during counselling. Here are the 10 most common mistakes | and exactly how to avoid each one.
❌
Mistake 1: Name Mismatch Between Form and Documents
Fix: Copy your name exactly from your Class 10 board certificate | including spelling, spacing, and any initials. If your name appears differently in different documents, use the Class 10 certificate version as it is the primary document accepted during verification.
❌
Mistake 2: Wrong Category Selection
Fix: Select your category carefully | General, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS, PwD, or BPL. OBC candidates must specifically verify if they are OBC-NCL (non-creamy layer) | OBC creamy layer candidates are treated as General. If you select a reserved category without a valid certificate, your reservation benefits will be cancelled during verification.
❌
Mistake 3: Uploading a Photograph That Doesn't Meet Specifications
Fix: The photograph must be recent (within 6 months), on a plain white background, clearly showing your full face, without glasses, and in JPEG format. A dark background, selfie-style photo, or photo with sunglasses/cap is commonly rejected. Keep 5–6 compliant photos ready before starting registration.
❌
Mistake 4: Incorrect or Estimated Percentage in Academic Details
Fix: Calculate your aggregate percentage precisely from your marksheet. Do not round up. Enter the actual figure (e.g., 81.4% | not 82%). If currently appearing, enter expected percentage based on internal assessments, but verify once your marksheet arrives and update during the correction window if possible.
❌
Mistake 5: Waiting Until the Last Day to Register
Fix: Register in the first 2–3 weeks of the application window opening. Portal servers frequently slow down or crash in the final 48 hours before the deadline due to heavy traffic. A last-minute registration also leaves no time to fix any errors before the correction window opens.
❌
Mistake 6: Not Saving Application Progress
Fix: The application portal allows you to save your form at any stage and resume later. Use this feature actively | save after completing each section. If your session times out or your internet disconnects, your saved progress will be retained. Never attempt to complete the entire form in one rushed sitting.
❌
Mistake 7: Paying Fee Through Third-Party Websites
Fix: Pay the application fee only through the official CLAT portal at consortiumofnlus.ac.in. There are many fraudulent websites that collect CLAT registration fees. Payments made to third parties are not credited to your application and are not refundable. The Consortium has issued repeated warnings about such fraud.
❌
Mistake 8: Not Downloading the Confirmation Receipt
Fix: After successful fee payment and form submission, a confirmation receipt is generated. Download and save this in both PDF format and as a screenshot. Note your Registration Number / Application ID from this receipt. You will need this ID for admit card download, result checking, and counselling registration.
❌
Mistake 9: Using Wrong Mobile Number / Email ID
Fix: Register with a mobile number that you personally own and will actively use throughout the exam cycle | ideally your own number, not a parent's. All OTPs, admit card links, result notifications, and counselling communications are sent to the registered contact details. Losing access to the registered number or email can create significant delays.
❌
Mistake 10: Ignoring EWS Reservation If Eligible
Fix: EWS (Economically Weaker Section) reservation of 10% was introduced in NLUs from CLAT 2020. If your family's annual income is below ₹8 lakh and you belong to the General category (not SC/ST/OBC), you may be eligible for EWS reservation. Obtain a valid EWS certificate from a Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) before registration and upload it during the application. Many eligible candidates miss this significant advantage by not checking.
CLAT is not only for 5-year BA LLB aspirants. The same exam, conducted on the same day, also serves as the national entrance for LLM (Master of Laws) admissions at participating NLUs. The CLAT PG 2027 application process runs on the same portal with a separate PG section.
Constitutional Law, Jurisprudence, Contract, Evidence, Criminal Law, IPR, IHL, etc.
ℹ️ Can a Candidate Apply for Both CLAT UG and PG?
No. A candidate can apply for either CLAT UG or CLAT PG | not both simultaneously in the same application. If you are an LLB graduate and also have a Class 12 certificate, you must choose which programme you wish to pursue and register accordingly. A separate registration is required for each, but you cannot appear for both exams on the same day as they are conducted simultaneously.
11. What Happens After CLAT 2027 Registration? | Complete Post-Registration Roadmap
Completing your registration is only the beginning of your CLAT journey. Here is what happens next, step by step, from registration to final admission:
📥 Step 1: Admit Card Download (November 2026)
Your CLAT 2027 admit card / hall ticket will be issued online approximately 2–3 weeks before the exam. Log in using your Registration ID and password to download. Carry a printed copy to the exam centre. Admit cards are issued only to registered and fee-paid candidates.
📝 Step 2: CLAT Exam Day (December 6, 2026)
Reach the exam centre by 1:00 PM. Exam is from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Carry your printed admit card + a valid photo ID (Aadhaar card, passport, or school/college ID). No electronic devices allowed. The exam is pen-and-paper (offline) | 120 MCQs in 2 hours.
📊 Step 3: Answer Key & Result (December 2026)
A provisional answer key is published within 2–3 days of the exam. You can submit objections to the answer key (with a fee per challenge) within the stipulated period. The final result with All-India Ranks (AIR) is declared approximately 10–15 days after the exam.
🏛 Step 4: Counselling Registration (January 2027)
After result declaration, the Consortium opens a separate counselling registration portal. You pay a counselling registration fee (separate from the application fee), update your NLU preferences, and submit documents. Seats are allotted based on your AIR, preference order, and category in up to 5 rounds.
✅ Step 5: Seat Allotment & Fee Payment
Once a seat is allotted to you in a counselling round, you must pay the seat acceptance fee within the stipulated time to confirm your allotment. Missing this deadline forfeits your allotted seat. After accepting, proceed to document verification at the allotted NLU.
🎓 Step 6: Document Verification & Admission
Visit the allotted NLU for physical document verification. Original certificates (Class 10, Class 12, category certificate, photographs, etc.) must be presented. After successful verification, pay the NLU's admission fees (annual fee: ₹1.40 L to ₹2.20 L/year depending on NLU) and complete enrolment formalities.
CLAT 2027 registration is expected to open on August 1, 2026 and close on October 31, 2026 | based on the pattern consistently followed by the Consortium of NLUs since 2022. A short form correction window of 2–3 days is typically opened after the main window closes. Official confirmation will be available once the Consortium releases the CLAT 2027 notification (expected July 2026) on consortiumofnlus.ac.in.
What is the CLAT 2027 application fee?
The expected CLAT 2027 application fee is ₹4,000 for General, OBC-NCL, and NRI/OCI candidates and ₹3,500 for SC, ST, PwD, and BPL candidates | same as CLAT 2026. An additional optional ₹500 is charged if you wish to purchase previous years' official question papers. The fee is non-refundable under all circumstances and is payable online only.
Can a Class 11 student register for CLAT 2027?
No. Only students who are currently appearing in Class 12 (2026 batch) or who have already passed Class 12 are eligible to register for CLAT 2027. Class 11 students are not eligible. If you are in Class 11 in 2026, you can register for CLAT 2028 when you reach Class 12 in 2027.
Is there any age limit for CLAT 2027?
No. The Consortium of NLUs removed the upper age limit for CLAT from 2019 onwards. There is no maximum age restriction for either CLAT UG (5-year LLB) or CLAT PG (LLM). Candidates of any age who meet the academic eligibility criteria can apply.
Can I make changes after submitting the CLAT 2027 application form?
Yes, but only during the designated form correction window (typically 2–3 days after registration closes). However, core details like your name, date of birth, registered mobile number, and email ID cannot be changed even during the correction window. This is why filling out the form accurately from the start is essential.
How many times can I attempt CLAT?
There is no limit on the number of CLAT attempts. You can appear for CLAT multiple times as long as you continue to meet the eligibility criteria (i.e., you are either in Class 12 or have passed Class 12 / hold an LLB for PG). Many students appear for CLAT 2–3 times to improve their rank before securing admission to their target NLU.
What happens if I forget my CLAT registration password?
You can reset your CLAT portal password by clicking "Forgot Password?" on the login page of consortiumofnlus.ac.in. Enter your registered mobile number and click "Request OTP". Enter the OTP received, then set a new password. This is why registering with a mobile number you actively use is critical | you need access to it for OTP-based password recovery throughout the exam cycle.
Is there a separate CLAT registration for NRI candidates?
NRI and OCI candidates use the same CLAT registration portal but select the NRI/OCI category during the application. The application fee is the same as the General category (₹4,000). NRI candidates must upload their passport copy and proof of NRI status. Each NLU has a separate NRI quota (typically 5–10% of total seats), and the fee structure at NLUs for NRI seats is significantly higher than domestic fees.
The CLAT 2027 registration window (August–October 2026) overlaps with the most critical preparation phase. The exam is in December 2026 | you have just 4–5 months from registration to exam day. Use this period wisely:
August–September 2026
Complete CLAT syllabus coverage. Focus on English reading comprehension and legal reasoning. Start daily newspaper reading habit (The Hindu / Indian Express).
October–November 2026
Full-length mock tests weekly. Analyse score patterns. Revise weak sections. By mid-October, attempt at least one mock every 10 days.
