1. GNLU Gandhinagar | University Overview & Why It Matters

Gujarat National Law University (GNLU), established in 2003 under the Gujarat National Law University Act, is one of India's foremost National Law Universities and consistently ranks among the top 5 law schools in the country. Situated in Gandhinagar | Gujarat's planned capital | GNLU offers a fully residential academic environment on a sprawling campus at Knowledge Corridor, Koba.

GNLU is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under 2(f) & 12(B), approved by the Bar Council of India (BCI), and accredited with NAAC Grade A (3.1). The university is also a member of international bodies including the International Association of Law Schools (IALS), Asian Law Institute (ASLI), and United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) | placing its graduates in an internationally recognised academic framework.

Ranked #5 by NIRF 2025 in the Law category (and simultaneously #3 by The Week, Outlook, and India Today in 2025), admission to GNLU is highly competitive. The university's flagship programmes | particularly the 5-year integrated BA LLB (Hons.) | attract top CLAT rankers from across India, making it a dream destination for law aspirants targeting a national law university outside the top 3 (NLSIU, NALSAR, NUJS).

✅ GNLU's Strategic Advantage: The Gujarat Home State Quota

Unlike most NLUs where All India (AI) quota dominates, GNLU Gandhinagar reserves 25% of all seats for Gujarat-domiciled candidates | a significant structural advantage. Gujarat Home State candidates with a CLAT rank up to 3,815 (General, Round 2, 2026) can secure a GNLU seat, compared to the AI General closing rank of 392. For Gujarat aspirants, this makes GNLU far more accessible than its national ranking suggests.

2. All Courses Offered at GNLU Gandhinagar

GNLU Gandhinagar offers a comprehensive portfolio of law and interdisciplinary programmes at UG, PG, Diploma, and doctoral levels. Admissions are mode-specific | CLAT for most law programmes, and separate institute-level tests for MBA and PhD.

3. Eligibility Criteria | Programme-Wise

The eligibility criteria at GNLU vary by programme level. Meeting the minimum eligibility does not guarantee admission | it only makes a candidate eligible to appear for the relevant entrance exam. Final admission depends entirely on CLAT rank, category, seat availability, and NLU preference order.

Candidates of any age who have passed 10+2 with the required marks and a valid CLAT rank are eligible. Candidates appearing in their qualifying examination (Class 12 board exams) can also apply provisionally | subject to submission of their final marksheet before or at the time of admission.

4. GNLU Gandhinagar Seat Intake & Reservation Matrix 2026

Understanding the seat matrix is critical for CLAT strategy. The 172 UG seats are divided across categories and quotas as per the Consortium's reservation norms and GNLU's own Home State policy.

🎓 UG Seat Matrix | 5-Year LLB (All Programmes Combined): 172 Seats

5. GNLU Gandhinagar CLAT Cutoff 2026 | Round-Wise & Category-Wise

The CLAT cutoff at GNLU is expressed as All India Rank (AIR) | not a score. A lower rank number means a stronger performance. Cutoffs are released separately for each counselling round and differ across categories and quota types (All India vs Home State).

💡 How to Read This Cutoff Table

"Closing Rank" is the All India Rank of the last candidate who received a seat at GNLU in a given round and category. If your CLAT rank is equal to or better than (numerically lower than) the closing rank for your category, you are eligible to be allotted a GNLU seat in that round | subject to your preference list placement.

The gradual tightening of the GNLU cutoff year-on-year reflects its rising national ranking and increasing aspirant demand. Candidates targeting GNLU for CLAT 2027 should aim for a rank below 350 for a comfortable All India General seat, or below 3,500 for a Gujarat Home State General seat.

6. UG Admission Process | BA LLB / BBA LLB via CLAT

GNLU Gandhinagar's UG admissions are conducted entirely through the Consortium of National Law Universities' centralised CLAT counselling process. The university does not conduct its own UG admission interviews, group discussions, or separate applications. Every step | from registration to seat confirmation | happens on the CLAT Consortium's official platform.

1
Appear for CLAT UG
Register and appear for CLAT (Common Law Admission Test) conducted by the Consortium of NLUs. CLAT 2027 is expected in December 2026. Registration opens around July–August. Apply at consortiumofnlus.ac.in with the application fee of ₹4,000 (₹3,500 for SC/ST/BPL candidates).
2
Check CLAT Result & Your Rank
CLAT results are declared within 2–3 weeks of the exam (usually December/January). Note your All India Rank (AIR) and Category Rank. Compare your rank against GNLU's historical cutoffs for your category to estimate chances of admission.
3
Register for CLAT Counselling
After results, register on the CLAT Consortium's counselling portal. Pay the counselling registration fee (approximately ₹50,000 | this is treated as part of the first-year fee if you get a seat). Upload all required documents at this stage.
4
Fill NLU Preference Order
This is the most strategic step. Fill in your preferred NLU order on the counselling portal. Place GNLU Gandhinagar according to your rank and aspirations. You can list all 25+ NLUs in your preferred sequence. Do not leave GNLU off your list if it is within your rank range | preferences are binding for seat allotment.
5
Round 1 Seat Allotment & Decision
The Consortium releases Round 1 allotment based on CLAT rank + preferences + seat availability. If allotted GNLU: choose between Freeze (accept this seat, exit counselling), Float (keep this seat but remain eligible for a better NLU in the next round), or Slide (remain in counselling for a better programme at the same NLU). Pay the seat confirmation fee to keep your allotment active.
6
Subsequent Rounds (Typically 5 Rounds)
Multiple counselling rounds follow. Seats that are vacated in each round become available for candidates lower on the merit list. Candidates who Float in Round 1 may upgrade to a higher-preference NLU in Round 2 or beyond. CLAT 2026 had 5 rounds | Round 5 was the final merit list released in May 2026.
7
Confirm Seat & Pay GNLU Fees
After the final round in which you freeze or are allotted GNLU, pay the confirmation fee to the Consortium (applied toward your first-year tuition). Then pay the remaining balance directly to GNLU as per their fee payment schedule. Students must pay the confirmation fee by the specified deadline | typically 48–72 hours after allotment | to freeze the seat.
8
Report to GNLU & Complete Admission
Report to GNLU Gandhinagar's campus during the specified reporting window (typically May–June for CLAT 2026 admissions). Submit physical copies of all original documents for verification. Complete the admission formalities, pay any remaining fees, and register for the first semester. GNLU follows a residential model | hostel allotment is arranged separately.
⚠️ Critical: Seat Confirmation Deadlines Are Non-Negotiable

In CLAT counselling, missing the fee payment window after seat allotment means automatic forfeiture of your allotted seat. Always keep your payment details ready before results are declared. The deadline is typically 48–72 hours after allotment is published | do not miss it regardless of whether you plan to negotiate with the NLU or not. You can always surrender later; you cannot recover a missed payment window.

7. LLM Admission Process at GNLU Gandhinagar (via CLAT-PG)

GNLU's LLM admissions follow the same CLAT Consortium centralised process as UG admissions | but use the CLAT-PG (Common Law Admission Test for Postgraduate) score instead of CLAT UG. The LLM closing rank at GNLU (General AI, Round 2, 2026) was 336, making GNLU's LLM more competitive than its UG programmes on a rank-number basis | reflecting high demand from LLB graduates seeking a GNLU postgraduate credential.

StepDetails
EligibilityLLB (or equivalent law degree) from a recognised university with minimum 50% marks (45% for SC/ST). Final year LLB students may apply provisionally.
Entrance ExamCLAT-PG | conducted annually by the Consortium of NLUs. The exam tests legal knowledge, legal reasoning, and analytical ability at a postgraduate level.
CounsellingCentralized CLAT-PG counselling | same Consortium portal as UG. Fill NLU preferences including GNLU and preferred LLM specialisation.
SpecialisationsCorporate and Business Law | Constitutional and Administrative Law | Criminal and Security Law | Intellectual Property Law
Total Seats57 seats across all four specialisations (25% Gujarat Home State reserved)
Duration1 year (2 semesters). Full-time, residential programme on GNLU campus.
Fee₹1.20–1.32 Lakhs per specialisation for the full 1-year programme. Hostel fees are additional.

8. GNLU MBA Admission Process 2026

The MBA in Financial Management & Business Laws is a CLAT-independent programme with its own selection process. It is designed for graduates from any stream seeking a management education with a strong legal foundation.

1
Eligibility & Entrance Exam
Any Bachelor's degree from a recognised university with a minimum of 55% marks. Must have a valid score in CAT, CMAT, or MAT. Apply on GNLU's official website (gnlu.ac.in) as per the admission notification. Application fee is approximately ₹2,000.
2
Shortlisting via CAT/CMAT/MAT Score
Candidates are shortlisted based on their management entrance exam score. Equal weightage is given to the entrance exam score, Legal Aptitude Test, Group Discussion, and academic performance (10th, 12th, and graduation marks).
3
Legal Aptitude Test (LAT)
Shortlisted candidates appear for GNLU's Legal Aptitude Test (LAT) | a written test assessing basic legal knowledge, reasoning, and analytical ability. No law background is required for the MBA programme, so the LAT tests aptitude, not legal expertise.
4
Group Discussion & Personal Interview
Candidates who clear the LAT appear for a Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interview (PI) conducted at GNLU's campus or online. The GD and PI assess communication ability, business awareness, and legal aptitude. Final selection is on aggregate performance across all four parameters.
5
Merit List, Offer & Fee Payment
GNLU releases a final merit list. Selected candidates receive an admission offer and must pay the programme fee (approximately ₹4 Lakhs total) within the specified deadline to confirm their seat. MBA is a fully residential 2-year programme (4 semesters) on the GNLU campus.

9. GNLU Gandhinagar PhD Admission Process

GNLU offers one of India's most interdisciplinary doctoral programmes in law, accepting PhD candidates in 8+ subject areas. The process is distinct from both CLAT-based and MBA admission routes.

10. Gujarat Home State Quota at GNLU | Explained

The Home State (HS) quota at GNLU Gandhinagar is one of the most important strategic factors for Gujarat-domiciled CLAT aspirants. Unlike most NLUs where Home State quota is a small fraction of seats, GNLU reserves 25% of all UG and LLM seats for Gujarat domicile candidates | creating a dramatically more accessible pathway for the state's law aspirants.

ParameterAll India (AI) QuotaHome State (HS) Quota
EligibilityOpen to all CLAT candidates, any stateOnly Gujarat-domiciled candidates (as per definition)
Seat Share75% of total seats25% of total seats (~43 UG, ~14 LLM)
2026 General Closing Rank (UG)392 (Round 2)3,815 (Round 2)
BenefitNational competition | requires strong rank~10x more accessible for Gujarat candidates
Proof Required | Gujarat domicile certificate / ration card / study certificate showing 3+ years of education in Gujarat
Reservation within HS | SC/ST/OBC/EWS reservations apply within HS quota too
✅ Gujarat Aspirants: GNLU Should Be Your Priority Target

If you are a Gujarat-domiciled CLAT candidate, GNLU should almost certainly be placed at the top of your NLU preference list. A CLAT General rank of 3,815 | equivalent to roughly the 95th percentile of CLAT | is sufficient to secure a Home State General seat at GNLU, which is ranked #5 nationally. This represents extraordinary value. A Gujarat candidate with a 3,000 rank can access a top-5 NLU education through GNLU's HS quota | while the same rank might not secure admission to any top-10 NLU under the All India quota.

11. NRI, Foreign National & Special Category Admissions

🌍
NRI / NRI-Sponsored Candidates: 16 supernumerary UG seats (5 LLM seats) are available for NRI and NRI-sponsored candidates. NRI candidates must appear for CLAT and may also need to register separately on GNLU's official website. The NRI seat fee is typically higher than the domestic fee | check the current GNLU admission brochure for the NRI fee structure. NRI seats do not compete with domestic quota seats.
✈️
Foreign Nationals: Foreign nationals (5 UG supernumerary seats, 2 LLM seats) are exempt from CLAT and can apply directly to GNLU Gandhinagar through the university's international admissions portal. Applications require academic transcripts, language proficiency certificates (for non-English-medium applicants), and a valid passport. GNLU's membership in ASLI and IALS facilitates international student integration.
🏔️
J&K Residents (2 seats): Supernumerary seats available for permanent residents of Jammu & Kashmir. Candidates must appear for CLAT and provide a valid J&K domicile certificate. Additional documentation as per the Consortium's J&K candidate guidelines is required during counselling registration.
🌄
North-East India Candidates (1 seat): One supernumerary seat for candidates from the eight North-Eastern states (Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Tripura, Sikkim). Must appear for CLAT with a state domicile certificate as supporting documentation.
🏆
Sports Quota: GNLU offers admission through Sports Quota for candidates with distinguished sports achievements. The process requires submitting a separate Expression of Interest (EOI) form along with legitimate sports certificates and achievements. Contact GNLU's Sports Office for specific eligibility criteria and the current year's sports quota seats availability.

12. Documents Required for GNLU Gandhinagar Admission

Gather and prepare these documents before the counselling process begins. Document shortfalls at any stage | counselling registration, seat allotment, or final reporting | can jeopardise your admission. Have both originals and self-attested photocopies ready.

ℹ️ OBC-NCL Certificate: The Most Commonly Delayed Document

The OBC Non-Creamy Layer (OBC-NCL) certificate is one of the most frequently delayed documents during CLAT counselling. This certificate must be issued by a competent authority in the current financial year | certificates from previous years are typically not accepted. Apply for your OBC-NCL certificate as soon as CLAT results are declared, as government offices can take 2–3 weeks to issue fresh certificates.

13. CLAT Counselling Strategy for Securing a GNLU Seat

CLAT counselling is more strategic than it appears. Here is how to maximise your chances of securing a GNLU Gandhinagar seat in the counselling process.

✅ What Smart CLAT Counselling Candidates Do
Fill all NLUs in preference order | never leave an NLU unranked that falls within your rank range. You can always refuse an allotment; you cannot get it back if you left it off your list.
Use Float strategically | if allotted GNLU in Round 1 but targeting NALSAR or NUJS, choose Float (not Freeze). Float keeps your GNLU seat while you compete for a higher NLU in Round 2.
Gujarat candidates: put GNLU first | if you are Gujarat-domiciled and your rank qualifies for the HS quota, place GNLU at the top of your preferences unless a higher-ranked NLU is clearly reachable under AI quota.
Monitor results actively | CLAT counselling rounds are released at specific dates and times. Set multiple calendar reminders. Results are published online and you must log in promptly to take action.
Pay confirmation fees immediately | payment windows are narrow (48–72 hours). Keep a UPI, net banking, or credit card payment method ready and charged before results day.
❌ Counselling Mistakes to Avoid
Don't apply only your "dream NLU" | fill all realistic NLUs in your rank range. Leaving GNLU off your list because you're targeting NLSIU means you risk getting no seat at all.
Don't Freeze too early | if your rank is competitive for a higher-ranked NLU and you're allotted GNLU in Round 1, Float (don't Freeze) to retain the option of upgrading.
Don't assume cutoffs are fixed | counselling cutoffs shift between rounds as seats vacate. Some candidates secure a GNLU seat in Round 4 or 5 with ranks outside Round 1 ranges. Stay in the process through all rounds.

The benefits are substantial: a Gujarat candidate with a CLAT rank of 3,000 can secure a seat at India's #5 law university through this quota.

Q7. Is GNLU Gandhinagar's MBA programme worth it?

GNLU's MBA in Financial Management & Business Laws is unique in India | the only NLU-based MBA integrating corporate law deeply into a 2-year management curriculum. It is particularly valuable for candidates targeting careers in legal compliance, corporate finance, M&A advisory, banking regulation, or business law consulting. The 2024 median salary for GNLU graduates (across programmes) was ₹18 LPA. The MBA admission process uses CAT/CMAT/MAT scores and is separate from CLAT | making it accessible to management aspirants who didn't take CLAT. The total fee (₹3.53–4 Lakhs) is also significantly lower than comparable private-sector MBA programmes.
