1. About NLU Delhi | Overview & History

National Law University Delhi (NLUD), officially known as "National Law University, Delhi," is a public law university established by the Government of Delhi through the National Law University Delhi Act, 2007. The university was inaugurated and began operations in 2008, making it one of the newer but most rapidly ascendant NLUs in India. Its campus is located at Sector 14, Dwarka, South-West Delhi | strategically positioned close to India's legal capital.

What makes NLU Delhi unique among the 25 National Law Universities is that it does not participate in CLAT (Common Law Admission Test). Instead, it independently conducts the All India Law Entrance Test (AILET) for both BA LLB (UG) and LLM (PG) admissions. This independent exam has made AILET one of India's most competitive law entrance tests, with only 110 seats for BA LLB and thousands of aspirants competing nationwide.

NLU Delhi is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC), approved by the Bar Council of India (BCI), accredited by NAAC with Grade A, and is a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). Its academic programmes are internationally recognised, and the university holds international collaborations with universities in the US, UK, and Europe for joint degree programmes.

📍
Location Advantage

⚖️
Independent AILET Exam
NLU Delhi is the only NLU that does not admit through CLAT. It conducts AILET separately in December each year. This gives AILET a distinct exam pattern and makes it an independent pathway to law education at India's most elite law institution.
🌐
Global Collaborations
NLU Delhi offers joint Master/LLM programmes in Intellectual Property with foreign universities. It has collaborations with Bournemouth University (UK), University of Lucerne (Switzerland), and other international institutions for faculty exchange and joint research.

Always verify the current year's AILET notification for any changes to the age limit policy before applying.

6. NLU Delhi Admission Process | AILET 2026

Admission to NLU Delhi's BA LLB and LLM programmes is conducted exclusively through AILET (All India Law Entrance Test), organised by NLU Delhi itself. The exam is held annually in December. Here is the complete step-by-step admission process for 2026:

1
Check Official Notification at nludelhi.ac.in
AILET notification is published on the official NLU Delhi website. For AILET 2026, the notification was released around October 2025. For AILET 2027, expect the notification in September–October 2026. Read the notification carefully for eligibility, exam pattern, and syllabus updates.
2
Register and Submit AILET Application
Fill the AILET online application form at the official NLU Delhi portal. Enter personal details, academic information, category, and select exam city preferences. Upload photograph and signature as per specifications. Pay the application fee: ₹3,050 (General/EWS/OBC/Foreign) or ₹1,050 (SC/ST/PwD) via online payment.
3
Download Admit Card
The AILET 2026 admit card was released on the official website in November 2025. Download and print the admit card from your login. Carry the printed admit card + original photo ID to the exam centre. AILET 2026 exam date was December 14, 2025 (2:00 PM – 4:00 PM), same day as CLAT 2026.
4
Appear in AILET Exam
AILET 2026 was conducted as a Computer-Based Test (CBT) across 35 cities in India. The exam is 2 hours long (150 MCQs for BA LLB; different pattern for LLM). Negative marking of −0.25 per wrong answer applies. English is the medium of examination.
5
Check Result & Merit List
NLU Delhi publishes AILET results and provisional merit lists on the official website in multiple rounds. The 4th provisional merit list for AILET 2026 BA LLB and LLM was released in May 2026. Monitor nludelhi.ac.in and the official AILET website for all merit list releases.
6
Counselling, Document Verification & Fee Payment
Shortlisted candidates in the merit list must participate in the AILET counselling process. Attend document verification with original certificates (Class 10, 12 marksheets, category certificate if applicable, ID proof). Pay the first-semester fee to confirm admission. A provisional admission is granted until all documents are verified.

7. AILET Exam Pattern & Syllabus 2026

ℹ️ AILET vs CLAT | Key Differences

Unlike CLAT (which uses passage-based comprehension questions and has eliminated standalone GK), AILET tests direct GK questions and standalone legal reasoning principles. AILET is a CBT (online) exam while CLAT is pen-and-paper. AILET is held on a single day (same as CLAT in December), and it admits candidates to only NLU Delhi (110 seats) | making the competition per seat far more intense than CLAT.

8. NLU Delhi AILET Cutoff 2026, 2025, 2024 | Category-Wise

The AILET cutoff at NLU Delhi is expressed as the All India Rank (AIR) | the last rank in each category that received admission. Lower AIR numbers indicate more competition. Here are the historical cutoffs:

💡 AILET Target Rank for Safe Admission

To have a safe chance at NLU Delhi (General category), aim for AIR 1–50 in AILET | this gives you admission in the first merit list. Ranks between AIR 50–80 are in a "mayfall" zone across rounds. For reserved categories: EWS should target AIR 1–250; OBC should target AIR 1–400; SC/ST candidates with AIR 1–1,200 are generally safe. Competition is growing each year | aim for maximum accuracy in English, GK, and Legal Reasoning to break into the top 50.

9. AILET Counselling & Seat Allotment Process

The AILET counselling is conducted directly by NLU Delhi. Unlike CLAT counselling (which is centralised for all 24 NLUs), NLU Delhi manages its own admission rounds independently. Here is the process:

11. NLU Delhi Campus, Hostels & Infrastructure

NLU Delhi's campus at Sector 14, Dwarka, New Delhi, spans a purpose-built facility designed for a modern law school. While smaller in area than some older NLUs, it is a fully equipped academic campus in one of Delhi's well-planned districts:

📚
Library & Research Resources
A well-stocked law library with access to SCC Online, Manupatra, Westlaw, LexisNexis, HeinOnline, and JSTOR. Research assistance for PhD scholars. The library supports both doctrinal and interdisciplinary research that contributes to NLUD's publication metrics.
🏠
Hostel Facilities
Separate hostel facilities for male and female students within the campus. Allocation is based on merit and availability. Rooms are typically semi-furnished. Mess facilities are available with both veg and non-veg options. Annual hostel fee approximately ₹80,000–₹1,00,000.

12. Why Choose NLU Delhi? | 7 Compelling Reasons

1. 🏛 India's Legal Capital | Supreme Court on Doorstep
No other NLU can match NLU Delhi's proximity to the Supreme Court of India, Delhi High Court, and Parliament. This gives students unparalleled access to the highest courts, senior advocates' chambers, and policy institutions for internships from Year 1 itself.
2. 📊 NIRF #2 | Consistently Top-Ranked
NLU Delhi has held the #2 position in NIRF Law rankings for multiple consecutive years. This ranking directly influences recruiter perception, alumni credibility, and scholarship opportunities both in India and abroad.
3. 💼 ₹18 LPA Median Placement | Among India's Best
The median placement of ₹18 LPA (2024) and highest of ₹25 LPA makes NLU Delhi one of the best-paying NLUs for career starters. Its Tier-1 law firm recruitment (AZB, Cyril Amarchand, Shardul, Trilegal, Khaitan) is comparable to the very best from NLSIU Bangalore.
4. 🌐 International Exposure & Joint Degrees
NLU Delhi's joint degree programmes (IP-Joint Masters/LLM) with international universities in UK and Switzerland give select students an internationally recognised dual degree. NLU Delhi also has faculty exchange programmes and foreign visiting professors, creating a global academic atmosphere.
5. ⚖️ Prestige of an Independent Exam
Admission through AILET (not CLAT) signals that NLU Delhi has a distinct identity and standard. AILET's pattern emphasises legal reasoning and direct GK, attracting students with a sharper focus on law as a discipline rather than just language comprehension.
6. 📖 Research-Driven Curriculum
NLU Delhi mandates that all students publish in the NLUD Law Review or other peer-reviewed journals before graduation. This research orientation produces graduates valued in academia, policy, and Tier-1 legal roles. PhD and LLM programmes attract top scholars from across India.
7. 🔗 Powerful Alumni Network
While NLU Delhi is only 17 years old, its alumni are rapidly ascending the legal profession | as Supreme Court advocates, Tier-1 law firm partners, legal academics, and policy advisors at the Government of India. This growing network actively supports current students in internships and placements.

ℹ️ NLU Delhi or NLSIU Bangalore | Which to Choose?

Both NLSIU Bangalore (#1) and NLU Delhi (#2) offer comparable placement outcomes (₹18–20 LPA median) and elite academic environments. Choose NLU Delhi if: you want a career in litigation, constitutional law, policy, or arbitration | Delhi's legal ecosystem is unmatched. Choose NLSIU if: you want maximum corporate law placement from the oldest and most alumni-rich NLU. Both require exceptional AILET/CLAT preparation. The "better" choice depends entirely on career goals, not rankings.

14. AILET 2027 Preparation Strategy | How to Crack NLU Delhi

AILET is one of the toughest law entrance exams in India | not because of question difficulty, but because of the extreme competition for 110 seats. Here is an expert strategy to target AIR 1–50 in AILET 2027:

📖 English Language (Target: 30/35)
Daily reading of The Hindu Editorial or Indian Express. Build vocabulary using Word Power Made Easy. Practice RC passages daily | time yourself for 7–8 mins per passage. Grammar rules from Wren & Martin. AILET English is slightly harder than CLAT | expect dense legal-themed passages.
🌍 GK & Current Affairs (Target: 28/35)
Unlike CLAT which eliminated direct GK, AILET still tests direct factual GK. Use Manorama Yearbook + monthly current affairs magazines. Cover legal current affairs (Supreme Court verdicts, constitutional developments) every week from Bar & Bench and LiveLaw (both free).
⚖️ Legal Reasoning (Target: 30/35)
Focus on Principle-Fact (PF) questions | these are unique to AILET. Study Constitutional Law basics (Part III), Contract Law, Tort Law principles. Learn major legal maxims. Practise AILET previous year papers (2014–2025 available free online). Legal awareness questions test landmark judgements.
🧠 Logical Reasoning (Target: 30/35)
Use RS Aggarwal's Verbal & Non-Verbal Reasoning. Focus on syllogisms, statement-conclusion, critical reasoning, and number series. AILET logical reasoning is similar difficulty to CLAT but slightly more variety. Aim for 85%+ accuracy through daily 20-question timed practice.

Best Books for AILET 2027 Preparation

  • English: Wren & Martin (grammar), Norman Lewis Word Power Made Easy, The Hindu Editorial archives
  • Legal Reasoning: Pearson Guide to Legal Aptitude for CLAT/AILET; AP Bhardwaj Legal Aptitude
  • GK & Current Affairs: Manorama Yearbook 2027; Pratiyogita Darpan monthly; Bar & Bench (legal news)
  • Logical Reasoning: RS Aggarwal | A Modern Approach to Verbal & Non-Verbal Reasoning; MK Pandey Analytical Reasoning
  • Previous Papers: AILET 2014–2026 papers from official NLU Delhi website (free)
  • Mock Tests: iQuanta AILET mocks, LegalEdge, Endeavor Careers | aim for 5+ full mocks per week in the final month

15. Frequently Asked Questions | NLU Delhi 2026

What is the AILET 2026 cutoff for NLU Delhi General category? +
The AILET 2026 cutoff for NLU Delhi BA LLB General category was AIR 60 in Round 1 and AIR 71 in the final Round 3. For LLM, the General category cutoff was approximately AIR 58–68 across rounds. Category-wise BA LLB cutoffs: EWS ~AIR 290–320, OBC ~AIR 457–520, SC ~AIR 1,480–1,650, ST ~AIR 1,372–1,550 (across rounds). These are among the most competitive cutoffs of any law school in India.
Does NLU Delhi admit through CLAT? +
No. NLU Delhi does not use CLAT for admissions. It is the only National Law University that independently conducts its own entrance examination | the All India Law Entrance Test (AILET). AILET is held in December each year, on the same day as CLAT. Candidates must appear for AILET separately to get admission to NLU Delhi. All other 24 NLUs (except NLU Delhi) admit through CLAT.
What is the total fee for BA LLB at NLU Delhi? +
The total fee for the 5-year BA LLB (Hons) programme at NLU Delhi is approximately ₹20.5 – ₹23 lakh, which includes tuition (₹10 lakh over 5 years), academic services charges, hostel fees (~₹4–5 lakh), and mess charges (~₹2.5–3 lakh). Per year, total costs are roughly ₹4.1–₹4.6 lakh. The LLM (1-year) total fee is approximately ₹2–2.4 lakh (excluding hostel). Scholarships are available for meritorious and financially needy students.
How many seats does NLU Delhi have for BA LLB? +
NLU Delhi has 110 seats for the 5-year integrated BA LLB (Hons) programme. Additionally, there are 81 seats for LLM (1-year Master of Laws). The limited 110 BA LLB intake | with thousands of AILET applicants each year | makes NLU Delhi among the most selective law schools in India, with an effective admission rate of under 0.5% for General category candidates.
What is the NLU Delhi NIRF ranking? +
NLU Delhi is ranked #2 in India under the Law category by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025 with a score of 80. It has consistently maintained this #2 position for multiple years. It is also ranked in the 201–250 band by QS World Rankings 2026 for the Law stream | the only Indian law school in the QS top 250. NLSIU Bangalore holds the #1 NIRF position.
What is the AILET 2027 exam date? +
AILET 2027 is expected to be conducted in December 2026, typically on the same date as CLAT 2027 (first week of December 2026). Based on the pattern of previous years (AILET 2026 on December 14, 2025), the AILET 2027 notification is expected by September–October 2026, with applications opening in October 2026. Monitor nludelhi.ac.in for the official AILET 2027 schedule.
Can I appear for both CLAT and AILET? +
AILET and CLAT are conducted on the same day in December. You cannot appear for both exams on the same date | you have to choose one. Most aspirants targeting both NLU Delhi and other NLUs face this dilemma. If your goal is solely NLU Delhi and you are willing to skip CLAT (and all 24 NLUs under it), appear for AILET. If you want broader options across 24 NLUs, appear for CLAT. Some students appear for AILET if they believe they are in the top 50–100 nationally; otherwise, CLAT gives access to more options.
