1. Overview: Why This BHU vs NLU Jodhpur Comparison Matters

This is one of the most intellectually interesting college comparisons in Indian legal education | two prestigious institutions with radically different identities, fee structures, admission routes, and placement profiles. Understanding the distinction matters enormously for candidates deciding between the two.

Faculty of Law, Banaras Hindu University (BHU) is a 110-year-old institution set within one of Asia's largest residential universities. It operates as a central university law faculty, charges near-zero fees (₹12,000 total for the 3-year LLB), admits through CUET rather than CLAT, and has a strong legacy in judiciary preparation, civil services, and legal scholarship. It ranks #6 in The Week's law rankings 2025 | an extraordinary achievement for a non-NLU institution. The BHU Faculty of Law was the first institution in India to offer a full-time 3-year LLB and 2-year LLM programme.

National Law University Jodhpur (NLU Jodhpur / NLUJ) is a 25-year-old NLU established in 1999 by an Act of the Rajasthan legislature. It admits exclusively through CLAT, charges approximately ₹13.55 lakh per year for BA LLB, has a dedicated corporate law placement bureau, and ranks #5 in NIRF Law 2025. NLU Jodhpur is particularly respected for its BBA LLB programme | a flagship course that blends business administration with law and draws strong corporate recruiter interest.

3. Fees Comparison 2026 | The Most Critical Difference

The fee gap between BHU Faculty of Law and NLU Jodhpur is arguably the single most important differentiating factor in this comparison. It is not a marginal difference | it is a chasm that fundamentally changes the financial calculus of which institution offers better value.

Fee Component BHU Faculty of Law NLU Jodhpur Difference
BA LLB Annual Tuition ~₹2,000–5,000/yr ₹13,55,000/yr NLU Jodhpur costs ~270x more per year
BA LLB Total (5 Years) ~₹15,000–25,000 ~₹67–68 lakh NLU Jodhpur ~₹67 lakh more expensive
LLB 3-Year Total Fee ₹12,000 Not offered at NLUJ Only BHU offers this route
LLM Total Fee (2 Years) ₹27,500 ₹1,82,000 NLU Jodhpur 6.6x more expensive
Annual Hostel Fee ₹5,375/year Higher (market rate, ~₹1–1.5 lakh/yr) BHU significantly cheaper
Annual Cost of Living (City) Varanasi | moderate (~₹8–10 lakh/yr total) Jodhpur | moderate (~₹10–14 lakh/yr total) Similar cities, BHU campus cheaper
⚠️ The NLU Jodhpur Fee Reality | ₹67 Lakh Total Investment

NLU Jodhpur's BA LLB annual fee of ₹13.55 lakh makes the total 5-year programme cost approximately ₹67–70 lakh (including hostel and living expenses). This is a significant financial commitment. At a median placement of ₹12–15 LPA, a fresh NLU Jodhpur BA LLB graduate would need roughly 5–6 years of post-graduate income to recover the full education investment (before accounting for interest on education loans). BHU's ₹15,000–25,000 total cost makes it financially negligible by comparison. The ROI calculation must be central to this decision.

4. Admission Process | CUET (BHU) vs CLAT (NLU Jodhpur)

BHU Faculty of Law and NLU Jodhpur use completely different admission systems | meaning candidates who want to apply to both institutions must prepare for and appear in two entirely separate examinations.

Aspect BHU Faculty of Law (CUET) NLU Jodhpur (CLAT)
UG Entrance Exam CUET UG (for BA LLB) | conducted by NTA CLAT | conducted by Consortium of NLUs
PG Entrance Exam CUET PG (for LLB 3-yr and LLM) CLAT PG (for LLM)
Exam Pattern (UG) CUET UG: 150-question MCQ; Legal Studies section + domain subjects; 3 hours CLAT: 120 marks, 120 questions; English, GK, Legal Reasoning, Logical Reasoning, Quantitative Techniques; 2 hours
Exam Frequency Once a year (May–June) Once a year (December)
Covering Colleges BHU + 250+ central universities and other CUET-participating institutions All 25 NLUs + CLAT-participating private universities
Counselling BHU CAP-PG (centralised BHU counselling); separate merit lists per programme Consortium of NLUs centralised counselling (up to 5 rounds)
Reservation System Central government reservation (SC 15%, ST 7.5%, OBC 27%, EWS 10%, PwD 5%) Reservation as per Rajasthan state law + central reservation; includes Rajasthan Home State quota
Preparation Overlap Limited overlap | CUET and CLAT test different skills and patterns. Candidates should prepare for both independently if targeting both colleges.
📌 Can I Apply to Both BHU and NLU Jodhpur?

Yes, but it requires appearing in both CUET (May–June) and CLAT (December). Since CUET UG is conducted in the summer and CLAT in December, candidates who are serious about both should plan their Class 12 year strategically. CUET preparation focuses on domain knowledge and legal studies, while CLAT preparation requires legal reasoning, analytical skills, and current affairs. Most CLAT-focused coaching programmes do not cover CUET, and vice versa. However, both exams test English comprehension, which creates some preparation overlap. If CLAT rank falls short of top NLUs (below AIR 367 for NLU Jodhpur General), BHU Faculty of Law through CUET is an excellent alternative given its low fees and strong academic standing.

🎯 Cutoff Insight for CLAT 2027 Aspirants

NLU Jodhpur's General category BA LLB closing rank of AIR 367 (CLAT 2026) means a CLAT score of approximately 93–97 marks out of 120 is required. Rajasthan domicile students (HS quota) have an easier route with closing rank AIR 581. Students who score between AIR 370–600 on CLAT and want a top-tier law education should consider NLU Jodhpur BBA LLB (closing AIR 386) or the Rajasthan domicile BA LLB route. For students who appear for CUET rather than CLAT, BHU's cutoff of ~512 marks (General) is highly competitive but the fee saving of ~₹67 lakh is extraordinary.

The ranking picture is nuanced. NLU Jodhpur has a cleaner NIRF presence (ranked #5 as an independent law university) because NIRF assesses standalone law institutions. BHU Faculty of Law is not individually ranked by NIRF | it is assessed as part of BHU University, which dilutes its standalone visibility. However, The Week's methodology | which weights reputation and academic quality heavily | places BHU Law at #6, above NLU Jodhpur. This suggests that among legal academics and practitioners, BHU's 110-year heritage carries real weight even where it doesn't show on placement-weighted rankings.

NLU Jodhpur's BBA LLB programme is its most distinctive offering | a combination of business administration and law that directly prepares students for corporate law careers, M&A practices, and in-house counsel roles. This is the programme of choice for students with business ambitions entering law. BHU, by contrast, excels in its breadth of 3-year LLB access (286 seats | far more than NLUJ) and its range of PG diplomas and community-oriented law programmes, reflecting its central university mandate to serve diverse legal education needs.

8. Placements & Salary 2025 | Who Places Better?

This is where NLU Jodhpur holds a clear and measurable advantage over BHU Faculty of Law in the corporate law domain.

Placement MetricBHU Faculty of LawNLU Jodhpur
Median Corporate Salary (BA LLB)₹7–8 LPA₹12–15 LPA

Judiciary Career OutcomesVery Strong | PCS-J, UPSC, HJSModerate (corporate-focused culture)
Overall Employment Rate70–80% (incl. judiciary, govt, litigation)~85%+ (incl. corporate, litigation, judicial)

The placement numbers tell part of the story. NLU Jodhpur's Placement Bureau runs a structured Day Zero recruitment process | 27 offers received in a single two-day event in August 2025 from 13 law firms. This is a well-oiled corporate placement machine. BHU Faculty of Law's placement is more diffuse: a significant share of its graduates deliberately choose non-corporate pathways (judiciary examination, UPSC, litigation at Allahabad High Court), which are not counted in formal placement statistics but represent meaningful career success.

Unique Campus FeatureVishwanath Temple within campus; river Ganga proximity; holistic university ecosystemModern NLU campus with dedicated legal education infrastructure

BHU's campus advantage is unparalleled in terms of scale and ecosystem. Being on a 1,300-acre residential campus means law students have access to BHU's hospital, Olympic-standard sports facilities, multiple canteens, guest houses, and the cultural life of Varanasi | one of India's most historic cities. NLU Jodhpur's 42-acre law-specific campus, while modern and well-equipped, offers a more focused but narrower campus experience. Both have excellent law libraries and active moot court programmes.

10. Faculty, Research & Academic Excellence

Both institutions have strong academic credentials, but their research profiles differ:

  • BHU Faculty of Law publishes the Banaras Law Journal (est. 1965) | one of India's oldest peer-reviewed law journals in continuous publication. Faculty members have contributed significantly to constitutional law scholarship, criminal law reform, and jurisprudence. The 110-year institutional memory creates a rich tradition of legal thought.
  • NLU Jodhpur publishes the NLU Jodhpur Law Review and hosts multiple research centres including the Centre for Corporate Law and Governance. Its faculty profile includes specialists in business law, international arbitration, and technology law | aligned with its corporate law placement focus.
  • BHU's large faculty size (part of a 1,300-person university ecosystem) means law students benefit from cross-disciplinary perspectives from political science, economics, history, and social science departments | which NLU Jodhpur's standalone law campus cannot replicate.
  • NLU Jodhpur has benefited from younger, more internationally educated faculty over the past decade | reflecting the NLU system's drive for global research engagement and industry collaboration.

11. Career Paths | Judiciary vs Corporate vs UPSC

12. Return on Investment (ROI) Analysis

The ROI calculation fundamentally changes the comparison. Let us run the numbers for a General category student under a realistic scenario:

ROI FactorBHU Faculty of LawNLU Jodhpur
Total 5-Year Investment (Fees + Hostel)~₹25,000–50,000~₹70–75 lakh (fees + hostel + living)
Year 1 Expected Salary (Corporate)₹7–8 LPA₹12–15 LPA
Investment Recovery TimeUnder 1 year5–6 years
NIRF ROI Score (if calculated)Extremely high (near-zero investment)Moderate (₹12–15L median vs ₹70L investment)
Break-even PointImmediateYear 5–6 of career
Judiciary Career ROIExcellent (₹75K–1.2L/month + free housing)Poor fit (investment not justified for judiciary path)

From a pure ROI perspective, BHU Faculty of Law is essentially unbeatable | its near-zero investment means virtually any career path produces a positive return immediately. NLU Jodhpur's ROI is positive but requires a corporate law career path to justify the ₹70+ lakh investment. A candidate who attends NLU Jodhpur and then pursues judiciary or UPSC | where starting salaries are lower than corporate law | would face a severely negative ROI position for years.

13. Final Verdict | Who Should Choose BHU and Who Should Choose NLU Jodhpur?

🏛 Choose BHU Faculty of Law If...
  • Your career goal is the Judiciary or Civil Services. BHU's curriculum, culture, and proximity to Allahabad High Court makes it the superior choice for PCS-J, HJS, and UPSC aspirants. Many BHU law alumni serve as judicial officers and IAS/IPS officers.
  • You are budget-conscious or need an education loan. Paying ₹12,000 total for an LLB vs ₹67+ lakh is not a close decision for financially constrained families. BHU's quality is comparable | the cost difference is life-changing.
  • You are appearing for CUET rather than CLAT. If you took CUET and scored ~510+ marks, BHU is accessible | you don't need to separately prepare for CLAT.
  • You want litigation experience in north India. Varanasi's proximity to Allahabad High Court | one of India's busiest High Courts | provides unparalleled litigation internship and apprenticeship opportunities.
  • You want academic depth and legal research culture. The Banaras Law Journal (est. 1965), senior faculty, and BHU's interdisciplinary ecosystem offer rich academic exposure for students interested in legal scholarship.
  • You want the most affordable path to LLM from a top institution. BHU LLM at ₹27,500 total is extraordinary value; NALSAR (also via LLM) has a 95%+ harder admission, but BHU's LLM is among India's most prestigious outside the NLU system.
⚖️ Choose NLU Jodhpur If...
  • Your career goal is corporate law at a Tier-1 or Tier-2 law firm. NLU Jodhpur's Placement Bureau, Day Zero recruitment, and relationships with AZB, Khaitan, and CAM make it the optimal choice for firm-bound students.
  • You have a CLAT rank between AIR 300–500 (General). This rank makes NLU Jodhpur accessible. Students in this rank bracket have limited NLU options above it, making NLUJ one of the best available choices.
  • You are targeting BBA LLB for a business + law career. NLU Jodhpur's BBA LLB is one of the best such programmes in India for students who want to combine business acumen with legal expertise for M&A, private equity, or fintech legal roles.
  • You (or your family) can absorb the ₹67 lakh investment. If the financial investment is manageable and corporate law is the clear career path, NLU Jodhpur delivers strong ROI through structured placement access.
  • You are a Rajasthan domicile student. The Rajasthan Home State (HS) quota gives Rajasthan students a more relaxed CLAT cutoff (AIR 581) while maintaining the same quality of NLU Jodhpur education.
  • You want an internationally recognised NLU credential for global opportunities. The NLU brand is better recognised internationally for LLM programmes abroad and cross-border legal practice than a central university faculty.
🏆 Overall Verdict: Different Strengths for Different Goals

There is no universal winner. BHU Faculty of Law wins decisively on fee, affordability, heritage, NAAC grade, judiciary/UPSC preparation, and The Week ranking. NLU Jodhpur wins decisively on NIRF ranking, corporate law placements, structured Day Zero recruitment, BBA LLB programme, and corporate law career ROI. The decision should be driven by career intention and financial situation. If you are uncertain between judiciary and corporate law as a career path, BHU at near-zero cost keeps all options open at minimal financial risk. NLU Jodhpur is the right choice only if corporate law is a firm, committed career direction.

14. FAQs | BHU Law Faculty vs NLU Jodhpur

Which is better | BHU Law Faculty or NLU Jodhpur?
+

Neither is categorically better | each excels in different areas. NLU Jodhpur (NIRF #5 Law, 2025) is better for corporate law careers | structured Day Zero placements with Tier-1 firms (AZB, Khaitan, CAM), median ₹12–15 LPA, and the BBA LLB flagship programme. BHU Faculty of Law (The Week #6, 2025) is better for judiciary preparation, civil services (UPSC), affordable education (₹12,000 total LLB fee vs ₹67 lakh at NLUJ), litigation careers, and academic research. If budget is a significant factor, BHU wins unambiguously. If corporate law is the career goal and finances allow, NLU Jodhpur is the right choice.

What is the CLAT cutoff for NLU Jodhpur 2026?
+

The NLU Jodhpur CLAT 2026 cutoff for BA LLB (Hons) General (All India) was: Opening rank AIR 159, Closing rank AIR 367 (Round 1). For BBA LLB, the General AI closing rank was AIR 386 (Round 1). CLAT PG (LLM) General AI closing rank was AIR 448 (Round 1), AIR 480 (Round 2), AIR 489 (Round 3). Reserved categories (Round 1): OBC AI | AIR 1,411 to 1,427; EWS AI | AIR 942 to 970; SC AI | AIR 4,072 to 4,985; ST AI | AIR 8,113 (BBA LLB). Rajasthan HS (domicile) General closing rank: AIR 581. NLU Jodhpur has 104 total UG seats across BA LLB and BBA LLB combined.

Does BHU Law Faculty accept CLAT? Does NLU Jodhpur accept CUET?
+

No to both. BHU Faculty of Law does not accept CLAT scores | admission to BA LLB is through CUET UG (conducted by NTA) and admission to LLB 3-year and LLM is through CUET PG. NLU Jodhpur does not accept CUET scores | it admits BA LLB and BBA LLB students exclusively through CLAT (Consortium of NLUs) and LLM students through CLAT PG. These are completely separate admission systems. If you want to apply to both institutions in 2026–27, you must appear in both CUET (May–June 2026) and CLAT (December 2026). Students who miss CLAT but score well in CUET have access to BHU but not to any NLU.

Which has better placements | BHU or NLU Jodhpur?
+

NLU Jodhpur has significantly better corporate law placements. Its Placement Bureau manages Day Zero recruitment | 27 job offers from 13 law firms in August 2025, with top firms including AZB & Partners, Khaitan & Co., and CAM. The median corporate placement is approximately ₹12–15 LPA. BHU Faculty of Law's PG (LLM) median salary was approximately ₹9 LPA (NIRF 2025), with UG corporate placements at ₹7–8 LPA. However, BHU places far more graduates into judicial services (PCS-J, HJS) and civil services (UPSC) pathways | which are not captured in typical placement statistics but represent highly successful careers. For corporate law: NLU Jodhpur wins. For judicial/government careers: BHU wins.

Is the BHU Faculty of Law as good as NLU Jodhpur academically?
+

Yes | BHU Faculty of Law is academically comparable to NLU Jodhpur and in some dimensions superior. The Week Law Rankings 2025 places BHU Law at #6 (above NLU Jodhpur at approximately #8–9), reflecting its strong academic reputation among practitioners and scholars. BHU's Banaras Law Journal (est. 1965) is older than any NLU journal. BHU's NAAC grade of A++ (university level) is higher than NLU Jodhpur's A grade. Where NLU Jodhpur excels academically is in corporate and business law specialisation (aligned with its BBA LLB programme and placement focus) and in its more modern, globally-oriented curriculum over the past 25 years. Both institutions are academically excellent | the difference is specialisation focus, not quality.
